Then compare that total to the trailer’s payload capacity, not just a broad description like “utility trailer” or “equipment trailer.”
Payload is the difference between the trailer’s GVWR and its empty weight. A 7,000-pound GVWR trailer does not carry 7,000 pounds of equipment because the trailer itself uses part of that rating. The same principle applies to every trailer, whether you are hauling a zero-turn mower, a skid steer, pipe, rental equipment, or an enclosed cargo load.

Single axle trailers have real advantages, and price is only one of them. They are typically lighter, which can help a smaller tow vehicle stay within its towing and hitch ratings. They are also easier to maneuver in a driveway, storage lot, or tight residential jobsite.
With only two tires, one axle, and fewer brake and suspension components, routine maintenance is usually simpler. There are fewer bearings to service, fewer tires to replace, and fewer parts exposed to wear. If your hauling is occasional and light, that lower ownership cost matters.

There is a trade-off many buyers miss: tandem tires can scrub during tight turns. Because the axles do not pivot independently, the tires are dragged slightly across the pavement as the trailer turns. For enclosed trailers, think about future cargo and interior upgrades. Shelving, cabinets, generators, insulation, ladder racks, and concession equipment all add weight. For equipment and utility trailers, consider ramp angle, deck length, fender clearance, and whether the equipment will fit without forcing poor weight distribution.
